How do fake paper towels-faker towels – or homemade paper towels work in real life?
It’s been a few weeks since I published my “Faker Towels” post, so I thought I would share an update on how they are working for me – in real life – in my house.
I don’t know about you – but I’ve always loved to watch those “Where Are They Now?” specials and see my favorite TV stars or movie stars from old shows – how they look, what they’re doing, etc. This is one of those specials about my faker towels and what they are doing now!
I explained in my post that Faker Towels are DIY cloth towels you can use instead of paper towels. I made a stack of these to put beside my sink so the folks in my house grab those to wipe up spills, dry their hands, and clean up messes. I can then wash them and reuse them, instead of throwing a towel in the trash and having to buy more.
After placing my faker towels in their designated spot by the sink, I explained to everyone about my wonderful new “invention” and how we were going to use them. Of course, I got the requisite strange looks and a few muttered comments of “Mom has REALLY lost it this time.” However, I persevered with my plan and left the towels there for future use.
Oh – as a side note – I hid the “real” paper towels from the family. I knew from past experience, if left out, the paper ones would get used rather than the faker towels. So I hid the towels and pretended we were out when asked where they were :-).
As you might imagine, once the paper towels were “out of sight, out of mind” for a couple days, my skeptical (and not always as frugal minded as me) family started using the faker towels. It was slow at first, but now they do it regularly.
In fact, one of my kiddos who was probably the most reluctant to use the faker towels does so with regularity now – and even leaves them laying beside the sink if they are only wet from drying his hands. He knows I will reuse the faker towel to wipe down the counter or an appliance before I wash it! WOOT!
I do have the lingerie bag in the kitchen now. I was leaving it on the dryer so that I had to carry the faker towels out to the laundry room. However, that lasted about 2 days before I brought the whole thing into the kitchen and parked it here in my vintage cast iron Descoware dish. I needed a use for it and this works perfectly. Now everyone knows to put used towels here and they make it into the lingerie bag. (It’s empty in this picture because the faker towels are in the washer!)
A few things I’ve noticed about having the faker towels:
- I’m using less kitchen towels. Before, because I didn’t want to use paper towels for everything, I would automatically reach for a kitchen towel, which meant I went through a LOT of them. Now, with the faker towels right at my fingertips, I reach for those to use on small messes and spills.
- I haven’t bought any more paper towels since I started this. Right before I made my faker towels, I purchased two 6-roll packs of Bounty paper towels on clearance at Walgreen’s. They had “Frozen” characters on them, but – hey – they were CHEAP! That was probably almost 2 months ago, and I just now started the second pack. For me, that is huge, as before I would have already bought more paper towels due to how many are used.
- My family actually told me they like the faker towels better. Now THIS was big for me, as the last time, I received nothing but complaints! I am not sure what changed exactly this time, but I have been told by almost all of them (one of them is a stubborn hold out!) they like having the faker towels available.
- I can always make more as needed. Since I decided not to hem these, if I have an almost worn out kitchen towel and I need more faker towels, it’s as easy as snip, snip, snip and I have more towels. In fact, since the original post, I did make a few more faker towels because we were running out too quickly.
That’s my quickie update on the faker towels. I would love to hear from y’all and find out if you’ve made faker towels. If so, how did your family like them? How did YOU like them? Leave me a comment below and let me know!
Until next time,
